Why I chose lab-grown diamonds for our jewelry

When I was a child, I remember a moment that has stayed with me forever. A customer entered my parents' jewelry store and asked my father a simple question:

Do you know where this diamond comes from?

My father, with honesty and humility, replied that he did not know exactly. He could only trace it back to the diamond exchange where it had been purchased. Like most stones, it had passed through more than ten hands before arriving at the jeweler's display case.
This moment deeply impacted me. It was the first time I saw that a customer was not simply buying a stone; they were looking for a story. And if it was an engagement ring, a symbol of lifelong commitment, that story mattered even more.

Over the years, as I explored the world of jewelry more, I realized that many of the stories behind diamonds were not beautiful at all.
It is no secret that diamonds have played a role in some of the darkest pages of our modern history, funding wars, fueling corruption, and displacing communities. Systems like the Kimberley Process, created to control the so-called "conflict diamonds," have proven ineffective. Even diamonds that do not come from conflict zones in Africa can still contribute to injustice and harm simply because they support an industry that thrives on extraction, opacity, and inequality.

The truth is: as long as the demand for mined diamonds continues, the problems will persist. That’s why I see lab-grown diamonds as a true alternative, not only technologically but also ethically. Lab-grown diamonds are not imitations.
They are identical to mined diamonds in every physical and chemical aspect.
What they are not, however, is part of an exploitation chain. They are free from the heavy legacy that mining has left behind, particularly in regions where human life has too often been valued less than the sparkle of a stone.

I do not claim that lab-grown diamonds are a perfect solution. Like any product, they still require oversight: how they are cut, where the energy comes from, how labor is treated. But I am convinced that they are an integral part of the solution. If global demand turned entirely towards lab-grown diamonds, much of the injustice associated with traditional diamond mining would disappear.

In a world where so many of us feel powerless against corruption, inequality, or destruction, this is one of the few areas where our choice can make a real difference. Choosing a lab-grown diamond is more than just a purchase. It is a quiet act of resistance. A way to say: We can do better. And at AguaDeOro, that is what we aim for; every day.
